Is a closed VoIP system worth it for your business?
Good question.
An open system (that means internet-based like Skype or Vonage) has the same vulnerabilities as any other internet application. That means you can be hit with VoIP spam, your calls can be intercepted and hijacked. You computer can be hit with a virus.
A closed system is as strong as its components. With a closed system, you have the hardware onsite and are responsible for keeping it all secure.
According t :
It costs more, but poses no greater security problems than traditional public telephony. For these solutions, a company would run VoIP through a secure wide area network and hand calls directly to the voice carrier, which would run them through its secure backbone until local breakout to the telephone network.
So in what way can a closed system be insecure? The risk comes from the outposts, the edge devices which can leave holes in a company’s security.
